Are sweets good for cats and can cats eat Jam?

You are currently viewing Are sweets good for cats and can cats eat Jam?

Sweets in general are not good for your kitty. It is very hard for your fur baby to breakdown sugar in their system. They simply do not produce enough insulin to process it.

Jam is mostly made of sugar and preservatives. Cats or even dogs don’t need sugar in their diet. Such high amounts of sugar can lead to an instant hike in their sugar levels, making them prone to diabetes. It also causes your cat dental problems in the long run. You should avoid giving your cat Jam. If you must, make sure you give them only organic, preservative free, sugar free & fresh jam that are made of strawberries or fruits that are safe for them. I would highly recommend you to squash and puree some cat friendly fruits, it’s a great replacement for jam.

Can Cats eat Peanut Butter?

Cats are always going around looking for things to munch on. There are chances you could find your kitty’s head in the PB jar. But, is it safe for cats to eat peanut butter?

Peanut butter can prove to be a choking hazard for your cat. Peanut butter has a sticky texture and can end up sticking to the roof and throat of your cat’s mouth. Some cat parents go ahead and let their kitty’s lick the PB off their fingers. I would simply say “it’s not worth it”. Peanut butter contains a lot of fat and could cause diabetes and weight gain. In case you find your cat indulging in peanut butter, it could have serious side effects like vomiting and diarrhoea. Some cats could be allergic to peanut butter as well. Peanuts in general should be kept away from cats.

Can cats eat Apricot or Strawberry Jam?

Our little kitty’s digestive systems are designed different than us. Consuming too much sugar is hard for them to process. Store bought jams are very high in sugar. The preservatives in them are toxic for cats. I usually just offer squashed fruit and that’s more than enough for your kitty. Keeping it natural is always the way to go.

Some cats go crazy for Apricots. One of my friends’ cat would climb up his shoulder and paw at his mouth while he ate Apricots. They do love their Apricots! Is it safe to feed your cat some fresh or dried apricot? Well, a nibble here and there does not hurt them. The only thing you need to pay attention to is the Apricot pit. The pit of an Apricot is poisonous to cats. It could kill your kitty. If your kitty consumes excess Apricots, it could cause them vomiting or a bad case of diarrhoea.

Summary

“Cats are sweet, with just the right amount of sass”. They don’t need sugar. Avoid jams, cakes, chocolates, ice-cream & anything that has too much sugar for your kitty. It really adds no value to them in anyway. They are unable to taste the sweetness in food. Replace those sugary treats with some wholesome nutritious home cooked meals.
