My furry Sherlock loves to inspect the weekly veggies. She digs in and looks for her favorite carrot. As soon as she finds it, a victorious meow can be heard echoing in the house. She summons me and demands her routine veggie play time. My cat loves it when I dangle the carrot with its leaves over her head.

All that seemed like a lot of fun but it made me wonder if raw carrots were safe for her.

Raw carrots are hard, chunky and rough on your cat’s throat. They don’t pose a threat on her tummy but there is a chance your cat could choke on it. Raw carrots are a big no-no for kittens and adult cats as well. If your cat is like mine and loves carrots, you can give them boiled or steamed carrots instead.

Can cats eat cooked carrots?

Most cats love cooked carrots. Since they are soft and tender when cooked, its easy to eat for cats. They pose no threat of choking either. Plain cooked carrots are just perfect for your kitty.

Avoid seasoning, butter or herbs while cooking carrots. Many pet parents don’t realize that certain ingredients that’s safe for human consumption can be toxic and life threatening to their fur babies. Garlic & Onion among other ingredients are toxic to cats. Avoid them at all cost.

Cats are primarily meat eaters and don’t prefer vegetables. If you’re still considering adding some veggies to your cats’ daily diet, I would recommend a small portion mixed in with their meats.

Do Cats eat Vegetables in the Wild?

Cats don’t eat fruits and vegetables. They are carnivores and meat is their staple diet. In the wild, they hunt Mice, Rabbits, Squirrels, Lizards &  Insects for a living. They like to munch on grass or leaves occasionally; not as a part of their diet but to naturally cleanse their gut.

Summary

Cats’ taste buds are different from humans. They cannot taste sweetness like we do. I don’t recommend raw carrots for your cat as they could choke on them. Boiled/cooked carrots on the other hand can be safely fed to cats. Use raw carrot and its leaves to play with them instead. Make them hunt for it. Mimicking hunt and play is a very good way to keep your cat on their paws.
